A
group of Maoist rebels ambushed a group of police in India’s western state of Maharashtra,
killing all 16 officers in the attack.
The
ambush occurred near a rebel stronghold in Nagpur close to the border with the state
of Chhattisgarh, an area known for Maoist activity. A police official confirmed
the attack and stated that the ambush on the officers left no survivors.
For
20 years Maoist rebels have been fighting to establish communist rule in
several Indian states and during that period more than 6,000 people have died.
