Shakhtar Donetsk defeated Werder Bremen, 2-1, in the UEFA Cup final on Thursday in Istanbul, Turkey. The UEFA Cup is the UEFA's second-tier club soccer tournament.
Brazilian striker Luis Adriano scored the opening goal for Shakhtar Donetsk at 25 minutes. Adriano's countryman Jadson scored the winning goal in extra time to defeat Werder Bremen. Fellow Brazilian Naldo scored the only goal for Werder Bremen at 35 minutes.
This is the first UEFA Cup that the Ukrainian team Shakhtar Donetsk has ever won. They finished second in the Ukrainian Premier League in 2007-08. Werder Bremen also finished second in the German league Bundesliga in 2007-08.
Shakhtar Donetsk had 11 shots (six on goal), while Werder Bremen had 15 (9) in the world-renowned football championship game.
Shakhtar defeated Tottenham Hotspur, 3-1; CSKA Moscow, 2-1; Marseille, 4-1; and Dynamo Kyiv, 3-2, to reach the UEFA Cup Final. Werder Bremen beat Milan, 3-3; Saint-Etienne, 3-2; Udinese, 6-4; and Hamburg, 3-3.
This is the last year that they UEFA Cup will have this same name. The competition will be rebranded as the UEFA Europa League effective with the 2009-10 season.
