The
Sri Lankan government has pledged to resettle most of the Tamils who have been
displaced due to the recent war with rebels.
Sri
Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapaksa stated that the resettlement of nearly
300,000 displaced Tamils would be completed within six months and as part of
the plan he expressed a hope for a “lasting political settlement.”
For
nearly three decades Sri Lanka’s military was involved in a war with the Tamil
Tigers, a rebel group that had been fighting to establish an independent state
for the minority Tamils. More than 80,000 people were killed during that
period, ending when the military made an aggressive push over the past several months
to finally eradicate the Tigers.
It
was during that final push that hundreds of thousands of Tamil civilians were
forced to flee their homes as violence spread through their villages. With the end
of the war international aid organizations quickly pushed for a relief program
for those displaced and on Wednesday Rajapaksa seemingly answered that call.
Rajapaksa
had met with Indian Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon and India’s national
security advisor and following discussions a joint statement was released
saying it was time to, “focus attention on issues of relief, rehabilitation,
resettlement and re-conciliation.”
India
plays a large role in the resettlement plans as the Sri Lankan Tamils have
close ties to the millions of Tamils living in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Sri
Lanka has said the process of allowing Tamils to return to their homes could
take some time as they continue to fan out the remaining factions of Tigers and
rebuild the infrastructure.
