India’s New Government Sworn In, Manmohan Singh Returns for Second Term as PM

India’s new government, headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has been sworn in following a ceremony at the presidential palace in the country’s capital city of Delhi.

President Pratibha Patil led the swearing in ceremonies as Singh and a 19-member cabinet took the oath of office for a five-year term, the second such term for Singh.

Singh led the Congress party to a decisive victory in the recently completed elections, grabbing 262 seats in parliament while the opposition BJP-led alliance snagged 158 seats. The PM has said he will focus on stabilizing India’s economy following the global crisis while also reaching out to those living in rural areas.
