Malawi
President Bingu wa Mutharika has been sworn for a second five-year term
following his landslide victory in the country’s recent election.
While
there were several foreign dignitaries attending the ceremony the opposition,
led by John Tembo, boycotted the inauguration, claiming the election had been
rigged. According to the election commission Mutharika totaled 2.7 million
votes compared to 1.3 million votes for Tembo.
Tembo’s
contention appeared to get some support from international poll monitors who have
expressed concern over the state media’s coverage of the election. Those
monitors felt the Democratic Progressive Party leader received the lion’s share
of coverage while Tembo’s campaign did not receive enough attention from the media.
Despite
Tembo’s allegations his opposition coalition partner Bakili Muluzi has
supported the election results and congratulated Mutharika on his victory. Muluzi,
himself a former president, had been barred from running in the election having
already served the maximum two terms.
During
the inauguration ceremony Mutharika pledged to “continue to fight corruption
because it is evil... it robs the poor and denies them their legitimate right
to a decent living.”
The
election victory for Mutharika provided an historical first for Malawi as his
running mate Joyce Banda became the country’s first woman vice-president.
