Pro-Government Forces in Somalia Launch Offensive Against Islamist Militants

At least 30 people have been killed since pro-government forces in Somalia launched an aggressive attack against Islamist militants in the capital city of Mogadishu.

The military offensive comes just one week after rebels seized large areas of Mogadishu in their ongoing effort to topple the Western-backed government. While the government in Mogadishu is backed by the UN as well as the African Union the peacekeepers installed within the city did not take part in the latest round of clashes.

Somali’s pro-government forces have been in a bitter fight with Islamist groups al-Shabab and Hisbul-Islam, both said to have ties with al-Qaeda, for control of Mogadishu. Both rebel groups want to install a hardline Islamist government in Mogadishu but the government forces have vowed to sweep the city clean of the rebels.
