New Madeleine McCann Suspect: Raymond Hewlett

U.K. police have named a former soldier a “person of interest” in the 2007 kidnapping of Madeleine McCann. Raymond Hewlett, a convicted pedophile with a history of sexual attacks on young girls, may face extradition from Germany for questioning in the McCann’s case.

Madeleine was 3 when she disappeared from the Praia da Luz resort in Portugal on May 3, 2007. Her parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, were eating dinner with friends when Madeleine was taken from their hotel room. No traces of Madeleine were found.

Hewlett was staying in a motorhome about an hour’s drive from the resort when Madeleine disappeared. He has denied any involvement in her kidnapping saying, “I’ve done nothing wrong, nothing, nothing nothing.”

A spokesman for the McCann family says Hewlett, 64, has been a person of interest for some time. “He remains a person of interest to the Madeleine investigators. But this is only one line of inquiry,” spokesman Clarence Mitchell says.

Hewlett is currently in a hospital in Germany for treatment of throat cancer. Mitchell says McCann investigators will travel to Germany to question Hewlett. “The investigators are seeking to establish the truth of some of the claims. Certainly, there are questions to answer,” he added.
