California's Economy Not Hurting One Summer Camp

A company that runs academic summer camps in Northern and Southern California says that the dismal California economy is not hurting its teen academic camps in the state.

Representatives of SuperCamp say that the summer program is filling up fast, in part, because their
California summer camps attract students from throughout the country and from several other countries, as well.

Another reason for SuperCamp's strong performance with its California camps is that it has had a presence in the state for 28 years. The first SuperCamp was held at Lake Tahoe in 1982. At that time, SuperCamp broke new ground in the summer camp industry by introducing a program that taught students learning and life skills.

The concept, while new at the time, caught on quickly and has grown to the point where it graduated its 50,000 student in 2008. In fact, today, the program is seeing many second-generation SuperCampers, as parents who attended in the 1980's are now enrolling their kids.

This year SuperCamp is holding camps at Stanford and Cal State San Marcos. At both locations programs for students entering grades 6-8 and grades 9-12 are being offered. Additionally, Cal State San Marcos will be host to a unique summer camp for parents, called Parent Weekend. This three-day program gives parents of SuperCamp students an overview of the program and tips on how to support their kids throughout the school year.
