Russia’s Vishnevsky Institute of Surgery announced Monday that the Lokomotiv hockey star who survived a plane crash that killed 35 of his teammates has died. Alexander Galimov died Monday of severe burns that covered over 80% of his body.
"Despite continuing therapy using all possible contemporary treatment, Alexander Galimov died from severe burns in the burn center of the Vishnevsky Institute of Surgery," the hospital said in a statement posted on their web site.
The plane crash occurred Wednesday near Yaroslavl, Russia. The flight was headed to Minsk, where Lokomotiv was set to play Dinamo Minsk on Thursday. A total of 43 died. Only Galimov and one of the eight crew members on board, Alexander Sizov, survived. The RIA Novosti news agency reports Sizov’s condition has improved and he is now out of intensive care.
The cause of the crash remains unknown and is currently under investigation.
