Amid Outburst from Serena Williams, Samantha Stosur Wins US Open

Serena Williams got beaten badly in the first set of the Women's US Open finals on Sunday. One thing that she did not need in the second set was to lose points for being a poor sport. In the first game of the second set facing a break point, Williams shouted "Come on!" as she hit a forehand. Unfortunately for her it was at the same time that Stosur was reaching for her backhand and the chair umpire ruled it a hindrance, awarding the point, and thus the set, to Stosur.

Williams took exception to the call and went to talk to the chair umpire, askingn "Aren't you the one who screed me over last time here?" After a smattering of boos from the crowd the game resumed. During a break in the action she proceeded to call the chair umpire "unattractive inside" and said, "Really, don't even look at me."

Williams's unfortunate outburst was similar to the one in 2009 at the US Open where she yelled at a lineswoman for making a call. that tirade earned her a heavy fine and put her on a two year probationary period. Sunday's rant earned her another fine but did not violate the terms of her probation.

Stosur became the first Australian to win a tennis major championship since Evonne Goolagong Cawley won at Wimbledon in 1980. After the match Goolagong Cawley texted Stosur congratulations on the victory.
