In an effort to quell the Islamist militant action in Somalia the African Union has called on the United Nations Security Council to impose sanctions against Eritrea which would include an enforced no-fly zone and a blockade of sea ports.
The sanctions call marks the first time the African Union has called for such an action against one of its own members but the organization has called Eritrea a major supporter of the insurgent militants in Somalia. Eritrea was specifically pointed out in the AU’s statement to the UN Security Council which said the international body should “impose sanctions against all those foreign actors, both within and outside the region, especially Eritrea, providing support to the armed groups.”
More than 4,000 peacekeeping troops from the African Union are already in place inside Mogadishu yet they face constant attacks from hard-line Islamists militants belonging to al-Shabab and Hisbul-Islam, both groups trying to gain control of the city.
Eritrea has denied the accusations that it supports and supplies the Islamist militants in Somalia as Information Minister Ali Abdo called the claims a fabrication created by American intelligence and that “the African Union is simply repeating the statement which is put in its mouth.”
