South Korea’s Former President Roh Moo-hyun Dies in Suicide Jump

After penning a short note that stated “too many people are suffering because of me” South Korea’s former President Roh Moo-hyun” leapt to his death from a mountain near his home on Saturday, stunning many inside the country he once led.

The 62-year-old Roh had been under investigation for allegedly taking more than $6 million in bribes during his presidential tenure from 2003-2008. Last month Roh apologized to the people of South Korea saying “I have no face to show to the people. I am sorry for disappointing you.” Shortly after the apology Roh was questioned by state prosecutors yet he never admitted any wrongdoing.

According to Roh he was aware that a business man had given his wife $1 million but he did not think that was a bribe. That same man had given a relative of Roh $5 million but according to the former president he thought that to be an investment. Prosecutors argued that all that money eventally made its way to Roh.

While Roh ascended to the presidency as a strong reformist who sought to clean up the government and bring peace with the country’s neighbor to the north that reputation quickly became tarnished as corruption charges dogged him over the past several weeks, something he was unable to overcome.

On Saturday the former president was hiking in the mountains near his home when he jumped from a cliff and was pronounced dead from head injuries. In his suicide note Roh stated, “Don't be saddened too much. Aren't life and death all a fragment of nature? Don't feel sorry. Don't blame anybody. It's destiny.”
