Nepal’s Parliament Elects Communist Leader Madhav Kumar Nepal as New Prime Minister

Three weeks after Nepal’s Maoist Prime Minister Prachanda resigned from his position due to a dispute with President Ram Baran Yadav the country’s parliament has elected Madhav Kumar Nepal, leader of the Communist Party of Nepal, as the new prime minister.

Nepal was the only candidate as Prachanda’s Maoist party didn’t field a candidate and boycotted the vote. Prachanda resigned as prime minister after his attempt to dismiss the head of the army was thwarted by President Ram Baran Yadav.

Last week Nepal was selected by an alliance of 22 parties to stand as a candidate for the open position and on Saturday he was confirmed by parliament.
