One week after the Sri Lankan army announced Tamil Tigers leader Velupillai Prabhakaran had been killed in a military offensive the rebel group has now confirmed his death, issuing a statement declaring he had “attained martyrdom.”
According to the statement released by the Tamil Tigers, Prabhakaran had been killed “fighting the military oppression of the Sri Lankan government.” His death came as Sri Lanka made an aggressive push to finally end the 26-year war with the Tigers who had been fighting to gain a separate homeland for the minority Tamils.
That war has now been declared over by Sri Lanka as they now move to resettle the hundreds of thousands of Tamils who were displaced by the recent fighting. The Tigers have said they would now lay down their weapons but would “enter a democratic process to achieve the rights for self determination of our people.”
As part of the Tamil Tigers statement the group called for a week of mourning for the fallen Prabhakaran and called on Tamils to “restrain from harmful acts to themselves or anyone else in this hour of extreme grief.”
