The surge in violence between pro-government forces and Islamist militants for control of the Somali capital Mogadishu continued on Sunday as a suicide bomber drove a pick-up truck loaded with explosives to the front gates of a military base and detonated the bomb, killing six government guards and a civilian.
Islamist militants have been trying to wrestle control of Mogadishu from the Western-backed government but on Friday they had many of their strongholds attacked by government forces in response to several attacks launched by the insurgents.
A force of 4,300 peacekeeper troops has been installed by the African Union yet they have not been involved in the fighting. The AU has condemned the Islamist insurgents in Mogadishu but they have not authorized any use of force from their troops, saying they are only there to protect the administration.
The African Union has requested the UN Security Council impose sanctions against Eritrea, an AU member, alleging that the government has been supporting the Islamist militants in Somalia. Eritrea has denied those claims and accused American intelligence for those accusations.
