The Mawazine world music festival being held in the Moroccan capital Rabat was met with tragedy on Saturday night when at least 11 people were crushed to death in a stampede.
According to reports the stampede occurred as many of the 70,000 fans packed into the Hay Nahda stadium were leaving following a performance from Moroccan singer Abdelaziz Stati. As fans were hurrying out of the stadium a wire fence collapsed and several people were thrown to the ground and trampled.
Rescuers worked to pull people to safety and several people were transported to hospitals with various injuries, at least seven of the 40 remain under observation.
Morocco has promoted the nine-day Mawazine world music festival as a symbol of tolerance within the country.
