Djokovic Tops Nadal in US Open Final
Novak Djokovic was convincing in winning the first two sets of the US Open final against defending champion Rafael Nadal, winning 6-2, 6-4. The third set was not as promising. After going into a tiebreak, Djokovic lost after a series of long rallies and hard fought points. He was laying on the ground with back pain and leg cramps and momentum was firmly on Nadal's side.
Starting the fourth set there were no signs of weakness and Djokovic played nearly flawless tennis to wrap up the major, his third of the year, 6-1 in the fourth set. Djokovic credited his play to a sense of confidence that he didn't have last year at the US Open where he lost to Nadal in the finals.
"I guess it just clicked in my head," he said, "Through the last couple of years, I didn't change my game in any major way...But I'm hitting shots that maybe I wasn't hitting. I'm going for it. I'm more aggressive."
The win continues a stellar season for Djokovic. He is 64-2 this year which approaches some of the all-time great win-loss records in modern tennis. John McEnroe's 82-3 in 1984 and Roger Federer's 81-4 in 2005 are in reach, though neither of them won three major titles as Djokovic has.
