Sunday’s deadly attack at a Sikh temple in the Austrian capital of Vienna has sparked riots in the Indian state of Punjab with thousands of Sikhs taking to the streets and clashing with police and security forces.
The riots were set off following the death of Guru Sant Ramanand on Sunday. The Sikh guru was attacked by a rival group of Sikhs while he was performing religious ceremonies and by the time worshippers rushed to his aid he had been mortally wounded.
News of his death quickly spread and his followers in Punjab immediately took to the streets, setting buildings, cars and trains ablaze while ignoring curfews that had been put in place. At least one man was shot and killed by security forces near Jalandhar and several more are said to be injured as the army attempts to restore order.
Leaders in Punjab have called for calm and set a meeting for Tuesday to try and keep peace among all groups of people.
