Church of Scientology on Trial in Paris, Facing Fraud Charges

The Church of Scientology is facing the possibility of being banned in France as the “sect” goes on trial, facing organized fraud charges brought on after a woman said she was pressured into paying large sums of money to  the organization.

According to the woman she was offered a free personality test ten years ago and over the past decade she was pressured into spending nearly $30,000 on books, lessons and medicine after being told she had a poor mental state.

Prosecutors at the Paris trial are arguing that the Church of Scientology used mental manipulation to pressure the woman; the church has denied those allegations and has said French courts have “hounded” them without legitimate cause.

France does not regard Scientology as a religion and if the church loses the case they could be banned.
