Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Looks to Meet U.S. President Barack Obama Folowing Elections

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said that he would like to hold a face-to-face meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama if he manages to win re-election next month.

While Ahmadinejad expressed willingness to address global issues with Obama he made it clear that he would not discuss Iran’s nuclear program outside current regulations already outlined by the United Nations.

During Obama’s presidential campaign he said he would be willing to meet with several of the world’s controversial leaders, among them Ahmadinejad. Obama reasoned that meeting with Ahmadinejad would open the door for dialog and possibly lead to a resolution concerning their nuclear program. That hope appears to have faded following Ahmadinejad’s announcement.

In that announcement Ahmadinejad declared Iran would never abandon its advancement in uranium enrichment to placate the West. The United States has accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons, a claim Iran has denied, insisting their program is for peaceful purposes.

Ahmadinejad is one of four candidates running for the Iranian presidency and barring a major upset he is expected to win the June 12 election.
