Rafael Nadal began his quest for a fifth straight French Open title and his seventh Grand Slam title with a relatively easy 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Brazil’s Marcos Daniel in first round action at Roland Garros on Monday.
Nadal stuck with efficiency in the match as he landed 76 percent of his first serves and while he only had three aces he was able to take advantage of Daniel’s service game as the Brazilian landed just 56 percent of his first offerings. While Nadal committed a surprising 32 unforced errors he made up for that by breaking Daniel’s serve on 7 of 11 opportunities.
Nadal, the world’s number one, has already won the Australian Open this year and is looking to continue his dominance on the clay court’s at Roland Garros where he has won the past four years, defeating Roger Federer in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2008 Nadal captured his first Wimbledon title leaving only the U.S. Open as the only Grand Slam event the 22-year-old Spaniard hasn’t won.
