French Open 2009 Round 1 Results: Roger Federer Cruises Past Alberto Martin in Straight Sets to Advance to Second Round

Roger Federer began his journey for the elusive French Open title on Monday with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Alberto Martin at Roland Garros, keeping the Swiss star in line to create history at the one Grand Slam event he has yet to capture.

Federer pounded out ten aces and didn’t commit a single double-fault on the day while having his serve broke just once. The 27-year-old Federer broke Martin’s serve five out of ten opportunities and collected 38 winners compared to just 19 for Martin.

Federer is sitting on 13 career Grand Slam singles titles, just one behind the record held by Pete Sampras. A win at Roland Garros would also mark a career Grand Slam for Federer as he has won Wimbledon five times, the U.S. Open five times and the Australian Open three times. Federer has reached the finals of the French Open the last three years only to fall to Rafael Nadal on each occasion.
