The National Disaster Management Authority says heavy rain and flooding in southeast Pakistan is expected to continue into next week.
Pakistani officials say Sindh province has already been hit hard by four weeks of rain and flooding. At least 226 people have died and more than 4.5 million acres of land is underwater. An estimated 80% percent of crops have been damaged or destroyed. The government is now under pressure to provide help to around 300,000 people who were driven from their homes by the weather conditions.
In an advisory posted on their web site, the National Disaster Management Authority warned a weather system developing over India could “cause widespread heavy rains in Pakistan during the coming week.” Heavy rainfall and severe flooding can be expected in Sindh while Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkwa and Balochistan provinces may see flash floods, according to the center.
The United Nations is providing aid on the ground while several countries have offered help in the form of monetary donations. China promised $4.7 million and Iran pledged $100 million in aid.
