Sports brief:
This will be the fifth time these two teams will have met in the World Cup, and the first since France beat the Italian side on penalty kicks in the quarter finals en route to their only cup title in 1998.
Italy advanced to the title match in dramatic fashion netting the go ahead goal against the host German side with two minutes remaining in extra time. The left footed strike by the Italian forward Fabio Grosso was followed a minute later by an Alassandro Del Piero goal to seal Italy’s 6th World Cup finals appearance.
Zinedine Zidane put the French in the finals with a penalty kick in the 33rd minute against Portugal. After a disastrous 2002 campaign that brought only 1 point in the Korea/Japan hosted event, France has a chance to return to the glory that was 1998.
The finals will be held Sunday July 9, 2006 at 2:00pm EST. in the Olympiastadion.
