Sports Brief:
Having already served three months in prison for his involvement in the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative steroid scandal, Greg Anderson found himself in a familiar setting after refusing to testify to a federal grand jury investigating his high profile client Barry Bonds.
Anderson was held in contempt of court by U.S. District Judge William Alsup when he declined to answer questions involving the grand jury’s investigation into Bonds’ testimony in the original BALCO case in December, 2003. Those grand jury hearings resulted in numerous leaks to the press. Anderson’s attorney, Mark Geragos, stated his client won’t cooperate with “a grand jury that is leaking like a sieve."
Greg Anderson, Bonds’ long time trainer and personal friend, has been accused by some of supplying the San Francisco slugger with performance enhancing drugs. Bonds testified before the original grand jury of the BALCO case that he had never knowingly used steroids or other prohibited performance enhancing drugs.
The grand jury investigating whether Bonds perjured himself in the original hearings had called upon Anderson to testify in March. Anderson’s refusal has led him to the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, Ca.
Anderson’s freedom will be gained when the grand jury’s term expires, which is expected in the next few weeks.
