Sonia Sotomayor Tapped as Nominee for Supreme Court

President Barack Obama has nominated Sonia Sotomayor to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court and if she is confirmed by the Senate she would become the first Hispanic to hold a position on the country’s highest court.

The 54-year-old federal appeals court judge, educated at Princeton and Yale, has long been seen as a frontrunner for the spot vacated by the retiring Justice David Souter and would bring more judicial experience to the Supreme Court than any other justice confirmed over the past 70 years.

Obama has been leaning towards Sotomayor as his first Supreme Court nominee after recognizing her record and ability to relate to the American people. If she is confirmed Sotomayor would be just the third woman to be elevated to the Supreme Court and would join Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the current bench.

Sotomayor has been at the center of controversy though as she struck down a discrimination case brought by white firefighters in Connecticut who sued the city of New Haven after they threw away the results of a promotion exam because too few minorities scored high enough on the exam.

The Senate will now have four months to confirm Sotomayor as the Court won’t begin its next term until the fall.
