Lebanon Arrests Army Colonel Accused of Spying for Israel

Lebanese security officials have arrested an army colonel and accused the detained man of spying for Israel, a charge that could lead to a life prison term with hard labor or the death penalty.

The Lebanese army has not commented on the arrest but the officer is accused of providing information to Israel concerning civilian and military installations as well as the movement of political figures in Lebanon.

In recent weeks Lebanon has seen a surge in arrests tied to espionage with some of the suspects standing accused of aiding Israel in their 2006 attacks. More than 1,200 Lebanese died in the 2006 war as Israel pounded targets inside the country and left much of its infrastructure in rubble.
