Jo-Wilfried
Tsonga, still searching for his first Grand Slam singles title, advanced to the
second round at the French Open on Tuesday after 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over
fellow Frenchman Julien Benneteau.
Tsonga
had to overcome 43 unforced errors in the match but managed to handle Benneteau’s
service game, breaking serve on five of 11 opportunities. For Tsonga it was the
second serve of Benneteau that opened the door for much of the match as he won
55 percent of those offerings.
Tsonga’s
best finish at a Grand Slam came at the 2008 Australian Open where he finished
runner-up to Novak Djokovic. He has not competed in the last three French Open
tournaments and in his only appearance in 2005 he lost in the first round.
