In a rematch of the of this years Australian open championship, Mauresmo once again defeated Henin-Hardenne for her first Wimbledon championship. Unlike the Australian Open, it wasn’t stomach problems that retired Henin-Hardenne but rather Mauresmo’s ability to overcome early mistakes and turn up her aggression.

Mauresmo became the first Frenchwoman to capture the Wimbledon championship since Suzanne Lenglen in 1925. Her victory prevented Henin-Hardenne from becoming the 10th woman to complete the career Grand Slam.

Henin-Hardenne came into todays final having won 17 straight matches, 13 of which came in Grand Slam events, all in straight sets. The serve-volley approach Mauresmo took on the grass courts proved too much for the obviously exhausted Belgian.

The number one player in the world couldn’t stop smiling after she lifted the prestigious trophy signifying her victory. “I don’t want anybody to talk about my nerves anymore,” Mauresmo said to a laughing crowd that witnessed the 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 finals.
