A man with mental health problems killed six people with an axe Wednesday morning in the central China province of Henan. Authorities identified the suspect as 30-year-old farmer Wang Hongbin. The motive for the attack is unclear.
According to media reports, Hongbin suddenly began attacking people on a street in Gongyi city. Four adults and two children died. All of the victims were on their way to a kindergarten. According to one witness, bystanders used objects to fend off Hongbin until police arrived and arrested him.
Local news outlets reported Hongbin’s medical records show he suffers from schizophrenia. No other details were released.
