US researchers have found a possible correlation between an enzyme produced in the body and the reward system associated with various addictive substances.
The study was conducted at the Ernest Gallo Clinic and Research Center and published in the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences; it shows that mice that lack the enzyme PKC epsilon are deficient in the receptors responsible for releasing dopamine when presented with nicotine, drugs and alcohol.
