North
Korea has abandoned a long standing truce with South Korea after their neighbor
joined the U.S.-led Proliferation Security Initiative which plans to search
ships that are carrying suspicious cargoes in an attempt to halt the transportation
of nuclear weapons.
That
action has been called a “declaration of war” by North Korea and has threatened
to launch an attack if any of its ships were stopped. In a statement released
by a North Korean spokesman the act it was declared, “Any hostile act against
our peaceful vessels, including search and seizure, will be considered an
unpardonable infringement on our sovereignty.” That declaration was followed by
a promise of a strong military strike against South Korea if the PSI carried
out their searches.
Tension
between the two sides has increased dramatically over the past two days following
North Korea’s successful underground nuclear test. Last month North Korea set
off alarms after test firing a long-range missile that many believe to have
been preparations for a strike.
On
Tuesday South Korea reported signs that North Korea had restarted their efforts
at producing weapons-grade plutonium at their Pyongyang plant, a move that has
further raised tension between the two sides.
