Dinara
Safina continued her push for her first Grand Slam singles title on Wednesday
and the Russian had little trouble getting past Vitalia Diatchenko as she blasted
her fellow countrywoman 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the third round at Roland
Garros.
Safina
was coming off a 6-0, 6-0 victory n the first round and her dominance continued
on Wednesday as Diatchenko had no chance against the world’s number one. Once
again it was Safina’s controlled serve that laid the groundwork for the win as
she placed 74 percent of her first serves in play and then won 74 percent of
those offerings. Diatchenko struggled with her serve all day, placing just 49
percent of her first serves in a match that lasted less than an hour.
Safina
reached the finals of the French Open last year but fell to Ana Ivanovic. In
2009 she reached the finals at the Australian Open but again fell, this time to
Serena Williams. Despite never winning a Grand Slam singles title Safina
reached number one in the rankings on April 27, 2009.
