Maria Sharapova continued her chase for a career Grand Slam on Wednesday as she managed to upset Nadia Petrova in dramatic fashion with a 6-2, 1-6, 8-6 victory that moved her into the third round at Roland Garros.
Sharapova overcame 22 unforced errors with seven aces and an ability to come up with big points at the right moment. The 22-year-old Russian broke Petrova’s serve on six of 10 opportunities and just outlasted her opponent in a third set that lasted 71 minutes, ten minutes longer that the first two sets combined.
Sharapova has won three Grand Slam singles titles in her career with her first coming at Wimbledon in 2004. Her next title came at the U.S. Open in 2006 and in 2008 she won the Australian Open, leaving only the French Open as the only Grand Slam event she hasn’t won. Her best finish at Roland Garros was a semifinals appearance in 2007.
