The
United Nations Human Rights Council has offered to assist Sri Lanka in its
efforts to provide humanitarian aid to those displaced from the recent military
offensive against the Tamil Tigers.
Sri
Lanka has been criticized by human rights groups for the conditions of several
camps that have been built for the nearly 300,000 Tamils who lost their homes
in the war. The UN has attempted to step in and offer support yet they did not
demand access to the camps where the Tamils are now staying.
The
Sri Lankan military has refused to allow any of the Tamils staying in the camps
to leave, saying they still have to ensure there are no rebels.
As
part of the resolution to offer support the UN Human Rights Council also
appealed to the international community to provide financial help to Sri Lanka
as it rebuilds homes and infrastructure destroyed by the offensive.
