The financial center of India, formally known as Bombay, Mumbai was shaken by a systematic detonation of seven bombs that targeted the heavily trafficked rail system. The deadly blasts came in a seemingly calculated fashion with each bomb originating in the first class section of the trains.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh quickly labeled the attacks as terrorist driven and called for an emergency cabinet meeting.
Despite no group claiming responsibility for the event, many suspect Kashmir separatists who have demonstrated similar techniques in the past. The city of Mumbai is no stranger to terrorist activity. The economic hub of India has been the site of numerous deadly attacks among them March 12, 1993 where 260 people were killed in a series of bombs.
Today’s blasts came hours after grenade attacks by Islamic militants killed eight people in India’s main city of the divided Kashmir region.
The troubled region of Kashmir has been the source of aggression between India and Pakistan since the two countries gained independence from England in 1947. In 1965 it elevated into a full scale war where both sides suffered thousands of casualties before the U.N. mandated a ceasefire.
Although the two countries have worked towards peace, many separatists still exist in the region. Chief among them, Dawood Ibrahim, a man linked to Osama Bin Laden and the Kashmir seperatist group Lashkar e Taiba. Ibrahim is wanted in connection with the 1993 blast.
