Venus
Williams, still in pursuit of her first career French Open singles title, survived
a huge scare from Lucie Safarova in the second round, edging
the Czech 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 7-5 in a match that spanned two days at Roland Garros.
Venus
pounded out ten aces in the two-and-a-half hour match and survived a match
point to keep her French Open run alive. Williams was able to capitalize on
five double-faults from Safarova and 28 unforced errors while she was able to
break her opponent’s serve on four of nine opportunities.
Venus
Williams has seven Grand Slam singles titles, five of them at Wimbledon and another
two at the U.S. Open. The American has reached the finals at the Australian
Open and the French Open but lost to her sister, Serena Williams, in both of
those Grand Slam finals.
