French Open 2009 Round 2 Results: Venus Williams Survives Huge Scare, Knocks Off Lucie Safarova to Advance

Venus Williams, still in pursuit of her first career French Open singles title, survived a huge scare from Lucie Safarova in the second round, edging the Czech 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 7-5 in a match that spanned two days at Roland Garros.

Venus pounded out ten aces in the two-and-a-half hour match and survived a match point to keep her French Open run alive. Williams was able to capitalize on five double-faults from Safarova and 28 unforced errors while she was able to break her opponent’s serve on four of nine opportunities.

Venus Williams has seven Grand Slam singles titles, five of them at Wimbledon and another two at the U.S. Open. The American has reached the finals at the Australian Open and the French Open but lost to her sister, Serena Williams, in both of those Grand Slam finals.
