Yankees Fall to Mariners in 12

The New York Yankees' Mariano Rivera will have to put his pursuit of career save number 601 on hold until Friday. The Seattle Mariners' Luis Rodriguez lead his team with a walk off home run in the first at bat of the 12th inning to beat the Yankees 2-1 and delay Rivera's pursuit of the career saves record.

The Yankees also failed to distance themselves anymore from the Boston Red Sox, who had lost earlier to the Toronto Blue Jays, and kept their lead in the AL East at four games. The Yankees only run came off a Nick Swisher home run in the seventh inning. Though their bullpen provided over three innings of scoreless baseball the offense never caught up and put runs on the board.

Mariners relief pitcher Steve Delabar got his first win of the season, a season that he started as a substitute school teacher, and played excellent defense to rob the Yankees of possible home runs and scoring opportunities. Despite the loss starting pitcher Ivan Nova pitched a good game. The only Mariners run he allowed came off of a wild pitch that slipped out of his hand as he threw. This allowed Mike Carp to score from third and take the lead.
