Placing accountability directly on the Lebanese government, the Israeli Defense Ministry stated “The Lebanese government is responsible for the fate of the Israeli soldiers, and must take immediate action to locate them without harming them and return them to Israel.”

Despite the demand Israel showed no signs of waiting for a response from their neighbor. Backed by ground troops, tanks and aircraft patrol Israel crossed the troubled border in search of the two captured soldiers.

In southern Lebanon Israeli forces targeted bridges and Hezbollah positions. The strikes resulted in the deaths of two Lebanese civilians.

With an already volatile world stage, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan called for the immediate release of kidnapped Israeli soldiers and condemned Israel’s retaliation in southern Lebanon.

Denying any involvement in the kidnapping but showing solidarity with the Hezbollah cause, the Palestinian backed Hammas believes the act has strengthened their demands. Hammas has demanded the release of prisoners held in Israel in exchange for a captured Israeli soldier, Cpl. Gilad Shalit, who was seized by Gaza militants.

Since the capture of Shalit, the Israeli military have killed more than 60 Palestinians in Gaza.
