Roger
Federer continued his push for his first French Open singles title on Thursday
as he dropped Argentina’s Jose Acasuso in a four-set marathon that lasted
nearly three-and-a-half hours. Federer moved into the third round at Roland
Garros following the 7-6 (10-8), 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 victory.
Federer
hammered out 11 aces in the match and placed 71 percent of his first serves in
play while winning 74 percent of those offerings. While Federer committed 45 unforced
errors he made up for that figure by collecting 72 winners and breaking Acasuso’s
serve on six of 12 opportunities.
Federer
is sitting on 13 career Grand Slam singles titles, just one behind the record
held by Pete Sampras. A win at Roland Garros would also mark a career Grand
Slam for Federer as he has won Wimbledon five times, the U.S. Open five times
and the Australian Open three times. Federer has reached the finals of the
French Open the last three years only to fall to Rafael Nadal on each occasion.
