At
least 16 people have died and more than 20 left injured after a bus carrying
elderly passengers down a mountain road slammed into a crowd of people in
southeastern Bulgaria.
According
to reports the bus had been heading down a mountain pass near the town of Yambol
when the brakes failed. As the driver tried to regain control the bus veered
directly into a crowd of people who had been traveling up the road to attend a
festival celebrating Ascension Day.
While
the majority of the deaths were said to have been from the crowd of pedestrians
there were a few passengers among the dead as well.
The
Bulgarian government has called for a day of mourning on Friday.
