Michael Cartwright, CEO and founder of the dual diagnosis treatment company Foundations Recovery Network, discusses the treatment of co-occurring disorders with George Williams of Inexcess.tv during the UK/European Symposium on Addictive Disorders (UKESAD).
UKESAD is Europe’s largest conference on addiction treatment. Here, clinicians gain continuing education units (CEUs) through the partnership with UK Professional Certification Board for Alcohol and Drug Counsellors. This year’s conference focused on therapeutic effectiveness, family-of-origin issues, interventions, medical issues and policies and structures to enable the best possible client-centered outcomes.
Among the many addiction agencies and exhibitors with a presence at the conference was Inexcess TV. Inexcess presents live broadcasts and online features which contain interviews and workshops with addiction and well-being experts as well as practical advice and information. These interviews and stories portray the personal experiences of people who have survived substance abuse and how they overcame their issues to offer help and hope to those still struggling.
During the interview, Cartwright discussed the beginnings of Foundations Recovery Network and his personal struggle with dual disorders at a time when treatment was focused on either the substance abuse or the mental disorder.
“The key concept is to treat both illnesses equal and simultaneously,” said Cartwright. “And that’s what our whole company is about.”
