Coming a day after two Israeli soldiers were kidnapped by Hezbollah militants in a cross-border raid, Israel launched its largest air strike on Lebanon since 1982. Targeting Beirut’s international airport and a Hezbollah TV studio, both located in the southern suburbs of the city, Israel struck with the intention of ending Hezbollah’s presence on Lebanon’s southern border.

Israel’s Brigadier-General Amir Eshel, deputy chief of air force staff, believed that the conflict could be lengthy declaring “We should not consider this a matter of days.”

Believing that the Lebanese government bore responsibility for the actions of Hezbollah, Israeli warplanes struck a Lebanese army air base near the Syrian boarder as well. This coming a day after Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert called the Hezbollah raid an “act of war” by Lebanon.

Fears of a large scale Middle East war were expressed by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. He implored the intervention of the world powers to stop this serious deterioration."

Lebanese officials stated that 35 civilians have died in the air strikes in southern Lebanon. Those numbers could rise as Israeli officials have made it known that they intend to strike the homes and offices of Hezbollah leaders in Beirut.

In response, Lebanese guerrillas launched rockets into northern Israel, killing a woman in her home. The attacks led to civilians seeking protection in underground shelters.

Israel has vowed to enforce an air and sea blockade until the conflict is resolved. Israel wants the return of the two soldiers captured while Hezbollah has demanded an exchange for Arab prisoners held in Israel.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced he will send a three-person team to the Middle East in an attempt to diffuse the tension, and resolve the conflict.
