Huge Crowds Turn Out for Funeral of Former South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun

Thousands of South Koreans lined the streets of Seoul, South Korea on Friday to pay their respects to former President Roh Moo-hyun, one week after the 62-year-old leapt to his death froma cliff near his rural home.

Roh Moo-hyun had been the target of corruption allegations and while he denied any wrongdoing it was evident that the claims had caused a tremendous burden on the former leader. It was just last month that Roh was questioned concerning $6 million he had received from a shoe manufacturer but he denied the money was a bribe. He then issued an apology to the Korean people for the scandal but maintained his innocence.

His death last Saturday stunned citizens who quickly blamed current President Lee Myung-bak and his Grand National Party for launching the investigation into Roh. Many believe the investigation was based on political motives and had no merit.

As the funeral procession left his home in the village of Bongha and made its way to Seoul tens of thousands of people lined the streets. After arriving in Seoul the funeral service was held at a former palace with large television screens broadcasting the ceremony to those gathered outside.

With the funeral now over riot police have been put in place to ensure order remains as many of Roh’s supporters turned from mourners to protesters and began chanting slogans and marching towards city hall.
