Bernstein Liebhard LLP Continuing to Pursue Denture Cream Neuropathy Lawsuits

The denture cream lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are continuing their investigation and filing of possible denture cream lawsuits for people who have experienced neurological and/or hematological injuries after using denture adhesive creams such as Fixodent, Poligrip, and SuperPoligrip. Many of these popular denture creams contain the mineral zinc, and have been linked to zinc poisoning. While small amounts of zinc are necessary in a healthy diet, it can be toxic when ingested in large amounts and can cause serious denture cream side effects, including copper deficiency, hematological injuries, and neurological injuries.

Denture Cream Zinc Neuropathy
Excessive consumption of zinc found in denture creams can cause neuropathy, a disorder of the peripheral nervous system that occurs when the nerves that connect the brain to the rest of the body are damaged. Symptoms of neuropathy include numbness in the hands and feet, pain or tingling in the extremities, loss of balance and coordination, loss of movement in the limbs, and decreased walking stride. Discontinuing the use of denture creams that contain zinc should eventually return mineral levels to normal, but the damage caused by
denture cream zinc neuropathy is usually permanent.

A study published in the August 2008 issue of the journal “Neurology” concluded that the neuropathy may be caused by excessive amounts of zinc in the body, which can lead to a copper deficiency. Zinc and copper regulate much of the neurological activity in the body, and an imbalance in these minerals can cause neurological problems. The study also suggested that the subjects of the study may have absorbed zinc from denture cream through their gums.

Denture Cream Lawsuits
Several denture cream lawsuits have already been filed by Bernstein Liebhard LLP against GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturers of Poligrip and SuperPoligrip, and against Procter & Gamble, the makers of Fixodent. These lawsuits seek compensation for physical injury, medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Because of the increasing number of denture cream lawsuits throughout the country, plaintiffs have filed motions with the United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation to consolidate their lawsuits. The motions state that the lawsuits should be centralized because they contain common issues of fact and combining them would be more efficient. The Panel heard oral arguments on the motion in Louisville, Kentucky on May 28, 2009. The venues sought included the Southern District of Florida, the Eastern District of New York, and the District of Colorado.
