The Pakistani military has said it has regained control of the largest town in the Swat valley, Mingora, after driving out Taliban insurgents.
Pakistan has launched a massive campaign against the Taliban in the Swat valley over the past month in an effort to purge the town of militants. The fighting has led to hundreds of deaths while millions have fled the area to escape the battles.
With the latest offensive by the Pakistani military have come new attacks by the Taliban, most notably a bombing in Lahore that targeted police and security buildings. In that blast more than 20 people were killed and 300 injured. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was in response to the military’s actions in the Swat valley.
Reclaiming control of Mingora is seen as a major victory for the Pakistani military yet they have said there is still plenty of fighting left in the Swat valley and they continue to search homes for militants.
