Former Iraqi Trade Minister Arrested at Baghdad Airport

Former Iraqi trade minister Abdul Falah Sundani was arrested at the Baghdad airport on Saturday after the plane he was on was ordered to turn back so that he could be detained.

Sundani was arrested on corruption charges, claims that led him to resign as trade minister earlier this month. While he has denied any wrong-doing he agreed to step down and Prime Minister Nouri Maliki accepted the resignation.

The arrest of Sundani was ordered by the Commission on Public Integrity after an investigation into his department revealed large sums of money had been missing.

Sundani had been on a flight to the United Arab Emirates when officials ordered the pilots to turn back to prevent him from fleeing the charges.
