Petting Zoo Fire in Chicago Kills Dozens of Animals

A fire that ripped through a Chicago petting zoo on Friday killed between 30 and 40 animals, just one month after the nature center was opened to the public for the season.

The cause of the blaze at Riegel Farm has not been determined but the director, Robert Graham, has said the 30 to 40 animals that died was a result of smoke inhalation. Riegel Farm, located in the suburb of University Park, has been a popular destination for families and school field trips since the 1960s.

Two horses, a bull, a cow and several rabbits, chickens and goats were among the animals killed in the fire.
