Former Sudanese President Jaafar Nimeiri has died at the age of 79 after developing “an illness” and becoming too sick to be taken out of the country for treatment.
Nimeiri rose to power in 1969 following a coup that kept him in office up until he was ousted in a coup himself in 1985. Following his removal from office Nimeiri spent 14 years in exile in Cairo before returning to Sudan in 1999.
There have been no details released on the illness that led to Nimeiri’s death. The funeral is to be held in Omdurman on Sunday.
