French Open 2009 Round 3 Results: Andy Roddick Advances to Round 4 at Roland Garros with Straight Set Win Over Marc Gicquel

Andy Roddick has reached the fourth round at the French Open for the first time after the American breezed past France’s Marc Gicquel in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-4, keeping his quest for a second Grand Slam singles title alive.

 

Roddick played nearly flawless tennis with just 11 unforced errors while taking advantage of Gicquel’s tough time serving. Gicquel managed to put just 49 percent of his first serves in play, winning on 63 percent of those. In comparison Roddick placed 68 percent of his first serves in play and won 84 percent of those offerings. Roddick managed to break Gicquel’s serve on four of seven opportunities while never having his serve broke.

 

Roddick has one Grand Slam singles title, the 2003 U.S. Open, while he has reached two Wimbledon finals and the U.S. Open finals in 2006, all three finals losses came at the hands of Roger Federer. His best finish at the French Open had been a third-round appearance in 2001.
